Why forms insist on PDF
A PDF is one file with a fixed page order and predictable dimensions, which is why submission portals want it. A folder of loose photos has no order, no page size, and arrives as several attachments — so most systems simply refuse it.
Photographing documents well
Shoot straight down in even light, fill the frame with the page, and avoid casting a shadow across it. Resolution matters far less than people expect: 1600 pixels on the long edge is comfortably enough to read printed text on A4, and keeps the finished PDF small enough to submit.
Order is the order you add them
Pages appear in the sequence the images are listed, so add them in the right order — or rename them numerically first, since most file pickers sort by name.
Getting it accepted first time
Submission portals reject documents for predictable reasons: the file is over the size cap, a page is rotated, or a corner of the paper is cut off. Check each photo shows the whole page with a margin of desk visible around it, and that nothing is upside down — the Rotate tool fixes orientation without re-photographing anything. Where a portal names a maximum size, compress to comfortably under it rather than exactly at it, since some systems measure the encoded upload rather than the file on disk.
FAQ
- Are my documents uploaded?
- No. Resizing, compression and PDF assembly all happen in your browser. Given these are usually IDs, statements or signed forms, that is the whole point.
- Will the text be readable?
- Yes. Each photo is bounded to 1600 pixels, which is enough to read printed text on an A4 page. Going higher mostly adds file size rather than legibility.
- Can I get searchable text out of it?
- No. The pages are images of documents, so the PDF contains no text layer. That needs OCR, which SnapTools does not currently offer — we would rather say so than produce something that looks searchable and is not.
